Big changes are coming to food packaging in Canada. Starting January 1, 2026, many pre-packaged foods will need a new “high in” nutrition symbol on the front of the package. At Guide, we’re here to help you understand what’s changing and how to get ready.
What’s the New Rule?
Health Canada’s new front-of-pack (FOP) labelling rules are designed to help Canadians quickly spot foods that are high in saturated fat, sugars, or sodium. If your product is “high in” any of these, you’ll need to add a special symbol to the front of your package.
Which Foods Need the “High In” Symbol?
You’ll need the symbol if your product meets or exceeds these thresholds per serving:
Nutrient | Threshold (per serving) |
---|---|
Saturated Fat | 2g or more |
Sugars | 15% DV (6g) or more |
Sodium | 15% DV (360mg) or more |
For main dishes (like frozen meals):
Nutrient | Threshold (per serving) |
---|---|
Saturated Fat | 6g or more |
Sugars | 19g or more |
Sodium | 720mg or more |
Some foods are exempt, like fresh fruits and vegetables, plain milk, and certain other items. For the full list of exemptions and more details, check Health Canada’s official guidelines.
What Should Brands Do Next?
-
Check Your Products:
Review your recipes and nutrition labels to see if any products will need the new symbol. -
Consider Reformulation:
If possible, think about lowering saturated fat, sugars, or sodium to avoid the symbol. -
Update Your Packaging:
Make sure your new packaging is ready before the 2026 deadline. -
Communicate Clearly:
Be open with your customers about any changes and why you’re making them.
